Come join us on this special afternoon in the garden, where we will harvest the rich compost from our biomeiler & spread it on our food forest area. After helping us harvest the compost, you are welcome to take away some rich compost for use in your own garden or local community garden.
The Green Living Lab biomeiler is not just a circular natural heating experiment, it also functions as a stage for music performances, an outdoor workshop area, and a place for local office workers and students to enjoy lunch in nice weather.
When we designed our biomeiler in 2015, it was the smallest biomeiler designed for an urban space at that time. It was conceived as a circular experiment, to see if we could successfully heat water from composting woodchip. We aimed to capture the heat from the natural composting process in water and then use this warm water to heat the floor of our dome. We would then use the resulting compost to add fertility to our food forest area, where fruit trees and fruit bushes particularly love woody compost. The water inside the pipes coiled inside the biomeiler successfully heated to 70 degrees celsius, and we used it to provide an extra heat source for the dome during the winter months of 2016.
So now we have some very rich woody compost great for feeding the trees and shrubs in our mini food forest!
**Please remember to bring along your own containers along to transport your compost home**
After our compost harvest we will enjoy some drinks and snacks in the garden. Please register your attendance for this event by email: firstname.lastname@example.org
We look forward to harvesting with you!
